Annual Wellness Checkups
When your pet gets their annual wellness checkup, here’s what you can expect:
During the visit, you’ll discuss your pet’s health at home, and you’ll have the opportunity to convey anything that may be concerning you such as changes in behavior or appetite, or anything else that’s changed since the last visit. Your veterinary team will also ask you specific questions in order to highlight common potential issues, as well as to get a better sense of the animal’s lifestyle at home.
Your pet will then have a physical examination. This is done to help catch any potential obvious problems such as deformities, growths, areas of pain or discomfort, or motility issues. It is necessary to determine your pet is healthy prior to any vaccinations.
Next, your pet’s file will be carefully reviewed, with an eye toward ensuring that all preventative treatments and any local government mandated treatments are brought up to date during the annual wellness checkup. These may include things like:
- Laboratory screenings for infectious diseases, such as heartworm, intestinal parasites, or tick borne diseases.
- Parasite control treatments
Annual wellness checkups provide the chance for your pet to receive needed diagnostic procedures and treatment in a wide ranges of service areas. Additional services that may be conducted during your pet’s annual veterinary check up include items such as:
- genetic screenings
- dental examination and treatment
- blood testing
- heartworm testing/treatment
- FeLV and FIV testing
- cardiac screenings
- and more
Wellness Checkups for Special Situations
Consistent wellness checkups are also crucial for pets that fall into special categories, such as aging pets as well as newborns, like puppies and kittens.
We recommend Distemper, Parvo (DAPP), Rabies and annual Leptospirosis as our core vaccines. We also offer influenza (bivalent) and bordetella vaccines for those with increased exposure to other dogs. We recommend year round heart worm protection, and offer Proheart12. With close exposure to wildlife, we recommend maintaining coverage against external parasites, such as fleas, ticks and mange as well. We recommend routine diagnositc testing to screen for infectious diseases and parasites, as well as monitoring internal health with routine blood work, and cardiac screenings. (Cats: Feline distemper, (FVRCP) and Rabies vaccines, routine monthly deworming as well.) Feline Leukemia is availble for high risk patients. Although some vaccines may not be needed annually, it is still important to provide wellness exams at least annually or every 6 months for senior pets.
Senior Pet Care
Older pets often develop a range of age-related issues, such as loss of appetite, mobility challenges and failing eyesight. Veterinary wellness checkups support the health aging of your beloved pet to help ensure quality life for as long as possible.
